The Velvet Trend: How To Use Velvet In Your Interior

The Velvet Trend: How To Use Velvet In Your Interior

If you are wondering how to decorate with velvet, this blog is here to help you along the way. Many of us are weary of velvet for fear of it looking tacky. However, if done correctly, velvet is a great way to instantly add texture, class and style to a room.

Velvet has become hugely popular in recent years and it’s no surprise as the soft fibres, sleek look and subtle sheen can transform even the dullest room into a cosy, lush and relaxing space.

Also, this is a good option as we edge into autumn because the thicker fabric will help to keep your home warm. Another benefit is that it is softer to touch, so you can avoid that horrible scratchy feel.

What exactly is velvet?

Velvet is a type of woven tufted fabric in which the cut threads are evenly distributed, with a short dense pile, giving it a distinctive soft feel. By extension, the word velvety means "smooth like velvet". Velvet can be made from either natural or synthetic fibres.

Where does velvet originate?

Due to its soft feel, velvet has often been associated with nobility so it has always been a high class fabric. It is believed that velvet originated in Eastern culture with pile weaves, woven using silk and linen, analysed as being from 2000 BC ancient Egypt. The procedure to make it was so complex that only royalty could afford to buy it. Other samples have been discovered from China dating back to 400 BC and then velvet peaked in popularity in the Renaissance period (between 1400-1600).

This may be surprising as nowadays, when we think of velvet; we tend to think of it as being from Western cultures as the Tudors adored velvet. In fact, Henry VIII even lined his lavatory with this plush fabric.
